Why I’m skipping For my daughter Jocasta
I’ve signed up to do 100 skips a day throughout August to raise money for Children’s Medical Research Institute and help save more kids’ lives. Can you help by sharing this message with the people you know and asking them to donate too?

Jocasta was born at 35weeks gestation. At the birth we noticed she has a very obvious purple discolouration covering 50% of her body. As a short amount of time passed it became quite obvious there were potentially some underlying issues we could not see that were causing Jocasta to look a little different to our other newborn babies.
 Although she was strong, she was breathing and doing everything on her own the doctors knew she had something going on and they were needing to do some specific tests. One side of her body was starting to look slightly different, her cheek, her ear and one of her feet was slightly larger than the other. It was a very scary and stressful time for us as parents of 2 other small children and a farm business to run. Not knowing what was happening or what her future may hold, even if there may have been a clock ticking for her. 
The specialist doctors organised some genetic testing to be done. That’s where at 10 weeks of age they found she has a rare gene mutation from the PIK3ca gene. There is a very large variation at how this can affect a child and we were fortunate that jojo had mild symptoms at birth. Dozens of babies are not so lucky and spend many months in hospital on strong medicine from day 1 of life. Doing everything they can to secure a future and overall establish a comfortable way of life. 

As Jocasta grows, her specific issue gets stronger. It is unclear what the future may hold for her health wise, she continues to be monitored by specialists and doctors. She has already had one surgery as an infant. Let’s get behind this fantastic cause, every newborn baby, every child deserves a chance. 
Without the incredible research already being done a lot of lives may be very different. 

I care about the 1 in 20 Aussie kids who face a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer. Most people don’t know that cancer is caused by changes in genes—but almost everyone will be touched by it. So, the research you and I support today may one day help someone we know, someone in our family.

There’s lots of work to do, but there is also lots of hope.
