I am a carrier of a changed cystic fibrosis (CF) gene, which means if my partner had also been a carrier, each pregnancy would have a 1 in 4 chance of our child having cystic fibrosis.
This isn't something most people think about until they're trying to have children—or, like me, until they're already pregnant. When I was pregnant with Ollie, waiting for Dwight's genetic test results was one of the scariest times of my pregnancy. We were incredibly lucky with the outcome, but it made me realise how many people don't know the genes they carry until it's time to start a family.
I can't imagine what it must feel like for those who don't receive the results they were hoping for. That's my why.
I care about the 1 in 20 Aussie kids who face a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer. Most people don’t know that cancer is caused by changes in genes—but almost everyone will be touched by it. So, the research you and I support today may one day help someone we know, someone in our family.There’s lots of work to do, but there is also lots of hope.
