Why I’m skipping
I’ve signed up to do 100 skips a day throughout August to raise money for Children’s Medical Research Institute and help save more kids’ lives. Can you help by sharing this message with the people you know and asking them to donate too?My son Logan, was born small but healthy from what we knew. He struggled to gain weight though and was behind on milestones. At 4 months, we started seeing doctors regularly as he was only 4kgs and was not putting on much weight. We started investigating possible reasons like allergies, cystic fibrosis and other causes. Just before his 1st birthday, he was admitted for over 2 weeks due to his weight being under 6kgs despite having over 1200 calories a day and any small illness caused him to drop any weight he did have.
At 4 years old, he was 11kgs and after running every other test we could get, he was finally approved for genetic testing where we found out that he has a rare condition that had never been seen before. His genetic change has never been documented in any humans and also in most animals which indicates that it could be the reason why he doesn’t grow normally and ages slower than most people. It answered a lot of questions but also created new ones such as ‘What does this mean for his life?’ and ‘How can we help Logan thrive?’
I am skipping to help children like Logan get access to testing that they wouldn’t normally be able to get and help their families.
I care about the 1 in 20 Aussie kids who face a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer. Most people don’t know that cancer is caused by changes in genes—but almost everyone will be touched by it. So, the research you and I support today may one day help someone we know, someone in our family.
There’s lots of work to do, but there is also lots of hope.
