Why is this cause so special to us?

We have  signed up to Jeans for Genes to raise money for Children’s Medical Research Institute and help save more kids’ lives. Can you help by sharing this message with the people you know and asking them to donate too?

Here's just one story explaining why this cause is so important:

Archie was born at 4:48am on the 27th of November with perfect blue eyes that instantly had you mesmerised. At the tender age of 6 months Archie began to show signs of late development. After many hospital trips and false diagnosis ' Archie was diagnosed with Tay Sachs disease at the age of 18 months. This disease is carried by both his parents which they were completely unaware of.  Tay-Sachs disease is a rare inherited disorder that progressively destroys nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and spinal cord. Tay–Sachs disease is caused by a genetic mutation in the HEXA genes on chromosome 15. Both parents need to carry the mutation to pass on the disease. Children with Tay-Sachs usually only see into early childhood. As the disease progresses, children with Tay-Sachs disease experience seizures, vision and hearing loss, intellectual disability, and paralysis.

From a parents view: Tay-Sachs disease is a genetic disease that takes over your child. It takes their greatest achievements, bright energy, ability to hold you and so much more. We watched our baby open his first birthday presents on his own, sitting up giggling. One year on and he can hardly move his arms and legs. Tay-Sachs has taken our baby and put a big black cloud over our hearts.

I care about the 1 in 20 Aussie kids who face a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer. Most people don’t know that cancer is caused by changes in genes—but almost everyone will be touched by it. So, the research you and I support today may one day help someone we know, someone in our family.

There’s lots of work to do, but there is also lots of hope.
