Your skips will help save kids like Alessia

When Alessia was born, her parents were delivered devastating news. She was the first child in NSW to be picked up for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

This condition would cause the nerves connecting to Alessia’s muscles to waste away. It would affect her ability to sit up, to crawl, to walk and she would eventually lose the ability to breathe.

“We were told she wouldn’t make it past two,” Alessia’s mother Adriana said.

But then came a glimmer of hope. NSW had just started a groundbreaking gene therapy. With one injection, Alessia’s genetic error could be corrected within her cells, effectively curing her condition.

Alessia became the first child in NSW to receive the therapy, and it worked. Alessia is a happy and healthy seven-year-old lacking only a small amount of muscular strength in her legs.

Your support of the Jeans for Genes Skipping Challenge helps fund the research that makes gene therapy possible! You’ll help save kids like Alessia and help us find cures to genetic diseases and cancers.
