I care about the 1 in 20 Aussie kids who face a birth defect or genetic disease. That’s one in every classroom, maybe someone you know or love. Every day, many of these kids wake up to pills, injections, hospital visits (or worse). They never get the chance to run around and just be kids. If they can endure that, and keep smiling, then the least I can do is fight alongside them. That’s why I’m doing Jeans for Genes and raising money for Children’s Medical Research Institute. I want to give these kids better treatments and maybe even a cure.
Our daughter Linke was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia at the age of 16 months. After 6 months of intensive chemotherapy treatment in South Africa, we were told that there is no hope for a cure, that we should take Linke home as she would not live to see her second birthday. We were devastated and desperate. I emailed a few Doctors and hospitals around the world begging for help. Then one amazing Dr responded. It was Dr Luciano Dalla Poza from Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney. We spent hours on the phone talking through her medical history, treatment and prognosis. He studied all her records and then gave us the best news any parent in that situation could ask for. He offered Linke a clinical trial in Sydney. When we arrived, he said “Rene, I can’t promise a cure, but I give you my word, I will keep trying”. Linke started treatment the very day we arrived in Sydney. The treatment was harsh, yet lifesaving. Linke is now in remission, living life to the fullest. She has a passion for dance and performing arts and is a honoured survivor. The Children’s Medical Research Institute included Linke’s case in the ProCan® initiative, analysing tens of thousands examples of all types of cancer from over the world to develop a library of information to advance scientific discovery and enhance clinical treatment worldwide. We hope to see Procan enable cures and less harsh treatments for children in future.
Linke is one of the little ambassadors for Jeans 4 Genes Day, a fundraiser that supports medical research for 1 in 20 kids that face a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and life threatening metabolic disorders.
